Sale Away During Dog Days

If you're looking for great deals this summer, forget about the mall -- look no further than the sidewalk. This weekend (Aug. 7 and 8) marks the return of the annual Mid-City Dog Days of Summer. The sidewalks of U and 14th streets will fill with racks and bins of discount items.

David Dennis, owner of hip home furnishings store RCKNDY (1515 U St. N.W.), said Dog Days is a great way to market to new and old customers.

The sale started as a way to clear out summer inventory and make room for new products, Dennis said. But now it's become more of a block party for the community. "People run into each other, see people they haven't seen in awhile... It's a great way for people in the community to come together," he said.

But it's not only a great place to find deals on furniture items; you can also get great deals on clothing, food, accessories and shoes. Stores like Treasury (1843 14th St. N.W.) offer 20 percent off all their summer items. Remember to check out the shop's famous $5 bargain bin, too.

Many shops also dish up refreshments to customers while they shop. Check out Mid-City's website for a complete list of participating restaurants and stores (also on the list: Redeem, Nana and Lettie Gooch). And foodie Amanda McClements of Metrocurean has highlights on the edible offerings, including free samples of Dolcezza sorbet.
