Crafty Bastards, the massive indie arts fair that Washington City Paper has sponsored since 2004, will have a new home this year: Union Market (1309 5th St. NE).
The fair, which had set up for the last seven years at the Marie Reed Learning Center in Adams Morgan, will take place Nov. 10 at the new venue. Union Market, opening the weekend of Sept. 8, will primarily host artisan food vendors; last year, the market hired chef Richie Brandenburg away from José Andrés' ThinkFoodGroup to run its operations.
"Their philosophy of embracing artisanal products and individual business owners lines up with what we've been doing with Crafty Bastards for the last eight years -- connecting shoppers with makers and deepening their understanding of how things are made," says festival director Sara Dick.
For the first time, attending will require a ticket. Beginning later this month, $10 tickets will be sold on washingtoncitypaper.com, as well as a limited number of $25 VIP tickets that get you into the fair early -- before everyone else has a chance to buy up the handmade, indie crafts you want.

(Washington, D.C.) Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair returns to Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, for another handmade shopping extravaganza!
Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair is an exhibition and sale of handmade arts and crafts from independent artists presented by Washington City Paper. The ninth annual event will be Crafty Bastards’ first indoor show at an exciting new location— Union Market, the new year-round indoor market featuring 40 local artisans opening Sept. 8, 2102 with designs to be D.C.’s culinary epicenter. Union Market is located at 1309 5th Street NE in Washington, D.C., and accessible via the NoMa-Gallaudet University/New York Ave. station on Metro's Red line.
Craft vendor applications are being accepted at washingtoncitypaper.com/craftybastards now through Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012. To be considered for booth space, applicants must submit five images of their work, an artist statement, and $10 non-refundable application fee before the deadline. Completed applications will be reviewed by the Crafty Bastards jury and applicants will be notified of their status by Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. See the vendor application page for more info.
For those seeking a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, Crafty Bastards Arts and Crafts Fair is not to be missed. In past years, Crafty Bastards has hosted a wide array of interesting and unique items including handmade hats, handspun yarn, bracelets made from camera parts, sculptures made from Monopoly game pieces, monster plushies, eco-friendly goods, pottery, clothing, and much, much more!
Crafty Bastards at Union Market will have ticketed admission. Tickets are $10 and will be available for purchase Sept. 28, 2012, at washingtoncitypaper.com. A limited number of VIP tickets will be offered for $25, providing early shopping access before the doors open for general admission.
