Bottom Falling out of Filene's Basement

Retail discount store closing Virginia location next month

Filene's Basement has decided to close 11 locations nationwide, including its store in Tysons Corner, Va., by the end of February, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The Journal cited a story in the Boston Globe in which it reported that Retail Ventures, Inc., the parent company of Filene's Basement, decided to close the Tysons location, along with three others in Maryland, because it was unable to negotiate rent reductions for those stores.

The stores closing in Maryland are located in Columbia, Hunt Valley and Towson.  While an exact date for the closure of those locations is not known, store managers who talked to the Washington Business Journal said they expected to close their doors by the end of next month.

The Filene's Basement website has already removed listings for the Tysons Corner and Maryland stores.

According to the site, the three Filene's stores in Washington, D.C., and the one in Rockville, Md., will remain open.
