Here’s a way to keep a nickel in your pocket: D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser is teaming up with Safeway to giveaway 500 reusable bags. They’re available at noon Saturday at the Safeway on 3830 George Avenue NW.
Reusable bags are the latest “mandatory fashion” if you want to keep change in your wallet. A new law makes customers shell out a nickel for each disposable bag they use to buy food. The fees go toward the Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Fund.
Bowser chairs the council’s committee on public services and consumer affairs. She said the giveaway gives residents the chance to “play a role in creating a greener District.”'
