Someone New to Love (Nightclub)

There's a new cupid in town.

Local real estate investor Dean Smothers is taking over Love Nightclub. The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration approved the transfer of the venue's liquor license Wednesday.

The club's former owner, Marc Barnes, filed for bankruptcy during the summer. Barnes also had owned The Park at Fourteenth.

But bankruptcy wasn't the only problem Love faced. In January, D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier ordered the club to close its doors after a stabbing on New Year's Day. There had also been serious altercations at the club on Dec. 26 and 27.

Smothers, a D.C. native, former Marine and current member of the D.C. Fire Department, promises to continue Love's tradition and attract a more diverse crowd by adding new musical theme nights.

The club at 1350 Okie St. NE will open Oct. 29 and 30 for Howard University's homecoming.
