Dished: The Rules of King Cake

  • Yet another name for today's holiday (known as Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras) is Shrove Tuesday, which is more commonly known as Pancake Day in English-speaking countries. Capital City Diner (1050 Bladensburg Road N.E.) is celebrating with a free short stack of pancakes for diners who come in between 6 and 10 p.m.
  • It turns out that chef Robert Wiedmaier has a secret rocker side—at least his cooking does. The chef and owner of several D.C. restaurants (Brasserie Beck, Marcel's, Mussel Bar, and Brabo) revealed to Bisnow on Friday that he's cooked for the likes of Eric Clapton and Allman Brothers' guitarist Derek Trucks in the past.   • Bayou Bakery has been busy preparing king cake, a traditional cake enjoyed at this season throughout the world. David Guas, the owner/chef of Bayou Bakery (1515 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington), makes his version of the dessert without the bells and whistles. "I wouldn't necessarily call myself a purist," said Guas, "but I like just a simple sort of cinnamon-hinted, coffeecake kind of cinnamon roll almost with a little bit of a glaze."
