Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron is off to a winning start in the Miss America pageant

All 53 contestants are competing in the preliminary rounds to make it to the final 15 for Saturday’s final competition.

Cameron dominated her talent round of the competition; her rendition of “Listen” from “Dreamgirls” captured the audience.  And she captured a $2,000 scholarship by winning the talent portion of the festivities.

The 22-year-old even surprised herself with her outstanding performance.

“When I started singing, I realized it was going even better than rehearsal, so that was pretty good,” Cameron told the Fredericksburg.com. "Because at [practice at] 8:30 this morning, it was rough."

Miss D.C. Jen Corey is not letting one of this year’s controversial judges deter her confidence when she answers her question. Corey said her native Washingtonian roots give her a leg-up on handling Rush Limbaugh.

“You always have to be prepared to talk intelligently about what is going on in our world,” Corey told Politico.

The Miss America Pageant airs live Saturday at 8 p.m. on TLC.
