"Looks like there's a best-dressed baby on the way!"

So tweeted Vanity Fair following the news that Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William, is pregnant Monday. Accompanying the tweet was a link to an Instagram picture showing Kate, 30, on the cover of the magazine's annual style issue.

So important to the fashion community is the mother of a future British monarch that style bibles such as Harper's Bazaar heralded the news, while In Style breathlessly proclaimed that "A new Prince or Princess is on the way!" Fashionista.com revealed the announcement with the headline, "Kate Middleton is Really Pregnant," in reference to the "is she/isn't she?" baby rumors that have circulated since the couple tied the knot a mere 20 months ago.

Women's Wear Daily even ran the announcement under the "Fashion Scoops" category on their website.

Kate has become a sartorial icon in the period following her nuptials, with women across the globe emulating her chicly elegant approach to dressing. Her influence on clothing purchases has been dubbed the "Duchess Effect." And her impact on the business of fashion retailing will only continue to grow in tandem with her bump, observers say.

The potential frenzy for Kate-influenced maternity fashion may have as big an effect on the world of style as her choice of that Alexander McQueen wedding dress back in 2011, says Shannon Guyton, site director of TheBump.com

"As soon as she stepped out of the car on her wedding day, dress designers went into action," says Guyton. "They designed replica versions of her gown and they were purchased by brides everywhere. We see the same thing happening for her maternity style."

"The big maternity style designers will be keeping a close eye on what she is wearing and then designing pieces that they will actually market as Kate Middleton style," Guyton adds. "And moms everywhere will start mimicking whatever elements she brings - like sleeved gowns following her wedding."

So fashionably inspiring is the mother-to-be, when she stepped out recently sporting a new hairstyle with long bangs, Manhattan salons reported a rush on the cut, according to the Daily Mail

“The first thing that attracted young women to her is that here was a princess-to-be and she is going out in a dress from Reiss that they all recognize,” Hal Rubenstein, fashion director of In Style magazine told NBC of the Duchess's influence at the time of the couple's first anniversary. “You also see her wear clothes more than once. Women feel that she actually goes into a wardrobe and chooses what to wear rather than grabbing something off of a rack the way most actresses do for a red carpet.”

That high/low practicality is something we will continue to see, believes Guyton: "She'll stick with the way she dresses normally, she'll just incorporate that into her bump style. She'll probably wear dresses with ruching across the stomach, and she'll probably wear bold shades of blue which is one of her favorite colors. Really curve-hugging, flattering silhouettes, nothing too drapey like we have seen from Jessica Simpson and Kourtney Kardashian, she'll wear more form-fitting pieces."

Guyton is also excited at the prospect of seeing maternity clothing highlighted on the red carpet and at formal evening events, thanks to the Duchess' continuing public role as a member of the royal family. Though she warns fashion followers not to expect any major shifts in personal style.

"She won't be too revealing, just as she dresses now," says Guyton. "You won't see her exposing too much, no plunging necklines. I think we will see her to continue to wear above-the-knee hemlines. People will want to emulate her. She's is in the spotlight and will obviously be in the spotlight even more now. However much she decides to show us her bump, we'll be watching."

<![CDATA[Marni to Launch First Women's Fragrance]]> Fri, 02 Nov 2012 13:46:06 -0400 http://media.nbcwashington.com/images/213*120/marnifragrancethumb1a.jpg

This February, quirky Italian retailer, Marni—which collaboated with H&M last spring–will debut its first-ever women's fragrance produced in collaboration with Estee Lauder.

Like the Marni woman, the scent is designed to be fresh and individual. "The perfume reflects Marni's fashion, certainly," creative director Consuelo Castiglioni told WWD. "Becuase it's a perfume that's quite individual, that doesn't evoke anything in particular. It's for a woman who dresses for herself, who doesn't follow trends but is sophisticated and also maybe a little eccentric."

That may seem like a lot of sartorial inspiration for a scent, but the the concept registers in a spicy blend of wood notes, tempered with a touch of rose oil for a feminine feel.

The bottle itself is also meant to evoke the Marni brand, inspired by an old bottle Castiglioni salvaged from a flea market.

“I wanted a bottle that was kind of traditional, that is, one that lasts over time, like the clothes we make, which last and you can still wear two or three years from now," Castiglioni says. "It isn’t seasonal. I think this bottle reflects our concept—you want to keep it. It also has the dots, which are part of our world, and a play on proportions with the cap. These elements are also important in our fashion.”

<![CDATA[5 Ways to Get Your Wardrobe Winter-Ready]]> Thu, 25 Oct 2012 14:33:14 -0400 http://media.nbcwashington.com/images/213*120/closet135529878.jpg

With winter approaching, the piles of beat-up sandals and floaty summer dresses are looking a little out of place in our closet.

Fortunately, mother-daughter duo Kate Berger and Ann Lightfoot of NYC organization company, Done and Done, are experts when it comes to whipping a closet into shape. Here, the pair spill their top five tips for getting your wardrobe winter-ready—and no, you don't have to toss your favorite high-school sweatshirt.

1. Going Through Each Category
– "Check to see if anything needs to be cleaned or repaired. Next, ask yourself a few questions. Did you wear it last winter? If not, when was the last time you did? Will you wear it this year? Or ever? If not, it's time to let it go. If it’s a favorite item, but has been worn to death and no longer looks fresh, start a pile. At the end of the day you can make a list of possible purchases for the upcoming season."

2. Try Everything On - "If items don’t quite fit but are still in style, consider that they might fit at this time next year and are worth saving. If they are both out of style and don’t fit, even losing 10 lbs isn’t going to make them work. Letting them go can make room for new purchases or just make space to find all your favorites with ease."

3. What To Store - "If you have sentimental clothes from an earlier time in your life, consider boxing them up to save. Don’t keep them mixed in with your working wardrobe. Give yourself the freedom to keep a few things that you aren’t ready to let go of yet. This will make the whole process of cleaning out your closet less painful and more fun."

4. Shoes – "Just like your clothes, gather all your winter shoes and boots together. Check to see if they need to be polished, re-soled, re-heeled, or replaced. If there is a pair that you haven’t worn for the last two winter seasons, consider letting them go and making room for a new favorite."

5. Scarves, Gloves and Hats – "Items should be folded and grouped by material. It always helps to color code and use those handy-dandy shelf dividers or bins. Consider putting lightweight scarves away for spring, wrapped in tissue; that way, they will seem fresh and new again when you pull them out in April!"

<![CDATA[Nanette Lepore Tries her Hand at Ballet Costuming]]> Thu, 25 Oct 2012 06:42:26 -0400 http://media.nbcwashington.com/images/213*120/lepore148093612thumb.jpg

Ever since "Black Swan," for which the Mulleavy sisters conjured up frothy tulle confections to outfit leading lady Natalie Portman, fashion has been entangled in a love affair with the ballet.

Now, Nanette Lepore is joining the ranks of designers-turned-costumers for a performance of "Picnic"— which premiered Wednesday at the Joyce Theatre—which takes inspiration from the 1975 film, "Picnic at Hanging Rock."

The costumes—which will worn by leading dancers Charles Askegard and Georgina Pazcoguin—feature color-blocked panels of candy pink and lime green set against and black and blue lining.

While images aren't available yet, our bet is that Lepore's ballerina looks will exude the same giddy feminity and elaborate design flourishes as her main collection.

<![CDATA[HBO to Debut New "Vogue" Doc this December]]> Wed, 24 Oct 2012 14:56:38 -0400 http://media.nbcwashington.com/images/214*120/hbodocumentarylead1.jpg

After last month's Newsweek profile on Anna Wintour, rumours have circulated that the editress and her team of high-heeled Vogue-ettes would be featured in a new HBO documentary. Now, more details have emerged about "In Vogue: The Editor's Eye," which will premiere this December to coincide with the release of a new book from Conde Nast by the same name.

The Newsweek article suggested the doc would focus exclusively on Wintour, but several top editors—including former editors like Babs Simpson and Prolly Mellen—are featured in the film, WWD reports.

The book, meanwhile, will include sections of editor "portfolios" highlighting their contributions to the magazine, each accompanied by an essay from Vogue writers like Jonathan Van Meter and Tonne Goodman.

The film will also offer behind-the-scenes looks at some of Vogue's most famous editorial shoots, as well as interviews with editors and fashion designers.

It may be one of the oldest fashion brands in America, but Levi's is still changing with the times. This week, the denim brand unveils a collection of men's and women's dungarees fashioned from recycled plastic bottles and even plastic food trays.

Dubbed "Waste<Less," each piece in the new line contains 20 percent recycled content—or approximately eight 12 or 20 ounce plastic bottles per pair of jeans, WWD reports.

According to the company's global president, James Curleigh, the aim of Waste<Less is to add "value to waste," he told WWD. "This collection proves that you don’t have to sacrifice quality, comfort or style to give an end a new beginning.”

The unique fiber—wich required more than 3.5 million recycled bottles sourced from municipal recycling programs to manufacture—is fashioned into a polyster material before being spun into a cotton yarn. Because the brown and green hues from the bottles can't be removed, each piece has a subtly green-tinged color.

Dropping this January, the new collection will offer familiar favorites like the 511 skinny jean as well as a new 504 straight fit and trucker jacket. Women sick of painted-on skinny jeans will relish a slouchier fit "boyfriend skinny."
