Thanks to fancy Internet doohickeys like Twitter, most people these days don't have the attention span for anything longer than 140 characters.

The end.

OK, just kidding! But the D.C. Shorts Film Festival does kick off this week, appealing to people who never didn't have remote controls in the house.

From Sept. 10 to 17, sample from more than 100 short films at two separate venues: E Street Cinema and the U.S. Navy Memorial's Burke Theater. One ticket ($12) covers about 10 shorts.

The first day of showings is Thursday, Sept. 10, but you'll have to wait until the next day for the grand opening party at Navy Memorial Plaza (701 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.). To attend, just purchase admission to the Friday 7 p.m. screening.

The following night (Sept. 12), a Midnight Madness party inhabits Bar Louie (701 7th St. N.W.) from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

During competition weekend (Sept. 10 to 12), 100 films will air in 10 rotating showcases. From Sept. 13 to 17, everything will be rescreened as wekk as remixed into specialty programs.

The week finishes off with a "Best of D.C. Shorts" screening on Thursday, Sept. 17.
