Pork Party on Pennsylvania

There's a battle brewing on Pennsylvania Avenue, and it has nothing to do with the White House.

On June 26 and 27, tens of thousands are expected to converge on the District for the Safeway 18th Annual National Capital Barbecue Battle.  It's a chance to witness barbecue teams and restaurants from around the country compete to win more than $40,000 in cash and prizes and the titles of National Pork Grand Champion.

The two-day event isn't just about pork, though. There's also Rancher's Reserve Beef BBQ Championship, the DC Lottery BBQ Challenge and the people's choice award.

It's one of the largest street festivals in the city and will take place on Pennsylvania Avenue between Ninth and 14th streets. It includes cooking demonstrations, a sampling pavilion and fun and games for children.

Over the course of the weekend, 30 bands will perform on three stages including Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk and many other rock and reggae groups.

The weekend kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday and wraps up at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults. For more info, visit www.bbqdc.com.
