Black Cat opened three doors down from its current location in September 1993 and has championed the independent music scene ever since. It made the move to  its larger confines in 2001. Morphine, The Fall and Stereolab were among the first bands to play the U Street Corridor venue, which has hosted most of the best local, national and international independent artists around. The main stage upstairs has a capacity of about 650 while the Backstage downstairs can pack in 200 (Beck played a surprise show there last year).
