Northern Virginian drivers are getting an extra pass from the Virginia Department of Transportation this holiday season.

To keep traffic moving, the department is opening lanes temporarily closed for construction or maintenance work on major roadways from noon on Christmas Eve until noon on Friday.  The lanes will then open again on Dec. 31, New Year's Eve, until Jan. 2.

In northern Virginia and more heavily traveled parts of the state, construction and maintenance projects will also be put on hold through the weekend following the holiday.

Long-term construction zones will remain in place.
