Tom Kierein is a News4 meteorologist. His forecasts can be seen weekdays on News4 Today, News4 Midday, and online. Listeners to NPR affiliate WAMU-FM can hear his forecasts during Morning Edition.
A member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), Kierein is an experienced teacher of weather and astronomy. He has conducted numerous seminars in broadcast meteorology and regularly visits area schools to talk about forecasting. He also wrote a children's book published by the National Geographic Society called Weather (click here to purchase a copy online), for which he received the AMS Louis J. Battan Author's Award.
Kierein was the science adviser for the National Geographic books Sky and Pocket Guide To Weather. He has contributed to publications including Weatherwise, the AMS' nationally distributed magazine.
Kierein joined News4 in March 1983 from WJAR in Providence. He studied meteorology and earth science at Indiana University, the University of Maryland, and the National Meteorological Center.
Kierein holds the AMS Television Broadcast Seal of Approval and has won EMMY awards for Best Weathercaster and for his storm coverage.
