Salute Our Services: Salute Our Services, Inc. was created in 2001 to augment existing family support programs of the United States Military and to encourage and facilitate the use of the Internet as a tool to enhance communication between deployed Soldiers and the families they leave behind while serving our Country. Salute Our Services seeks solutions to ease the burden of deployments. Communication is key when families are separated from their Soldier for long periods of time and family support is essential to the readiness and retention of the men and women who serve our Country. Alzheimer's Daycare Center: AFDC is the only dementia-specific adult day center in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It is the first, and still the only center in Northern Virginia with programs for people in the later stages of Alzheimer's. Web site: http://www.alzheimersfdc.org/index.htm
Dec. 10:
Crafts For a Cure: Join the fight against cancer by raising funds for cancer research and affordable treatments though the sales of beautiful handmade art and crafts. A worldwide network of crafters, artisans and enthusiastic volunteers donate their time and skills to create and sell beautiful handmade gifts. Dec. 15:
H.O.M.E.: Home of Miracles and Embraces is a dedicated resource for early detection comprised of effective service delivery systems aimed to sustain and promote good health, coupled with eradicating associated stigmas relating to HIV/AIDS. H.O.M.E. and its focus on youth strategy is also committed in establishing a safe haven retreat, grant holiday wishes, and create memorable experiences for youth living with HIV/AIDS. Dec. 16:
Birthday Blessings: At Birthday Blessing we believe when children don’t receive a birthday present on their special day they feel left out and forgotten. Long-term, this can potentially damage a child’s self-esteem. In order to help these children, we have created Birthday Blessing, a non-profit organization which provides birthday presents anonymously to underprivileged children. The organization started in 2002 by Sharon Brown. We provide approximately 500 presents to children each year in the Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland areas. By touching the lives of these children, we hope to help them grow emotionally and socially, so one day these children will have a positive impact on society. Dec. 18:
Fairfax Pets on Wheels: Fairfax Pets On Wheels brings together loving companion pets and Fairfax County residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. FPOW is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization sponsored by the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging. Since 1987, we’ve provided pet visitation through a network of more than 300 volunteers. FPOW has touched the lives of thousands of residents in Fairfax County. Currently, we provide visitation to residents in ten facilities, and have many more on a waiting list. DC-CAP: The District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP), a non-profit organization funded by Washington-area companies and foundations, encourages and enables DC public high school students to enter and graduate from college.
