Dan Hellie is the weekday anchor for News4 Sports. He also hosts Sports Final on Sunday nights and the Emmy-award winning Redskins Showtime on NBC4.
Hellie has deep roots in the Washington area. He was raised in Gaithersburg, Md., where he played football, baseball and basketball for Magruder High School. He met his wife Anne at Magruder, and they have two children.
Hellie was born in the Philippines, where his parents were serving in the Peace Corps. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and landed his first broadcasting job in Alexandria, Minn. Following that, he worked in Florence, S.C., West Palm Beach, Fla., and Orlando, where he anchored the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts weekdays and hosted SportsNight 9 on Sunday nights. While in Orlando, Hellie was named Florida’s AP Sportscaster of the Year. He also won an Emmy for best sports anchor in Washington, D.C.
He and his family reside in Bethesda, Md.
