Woman Smuggles Monkey to Court in Her Bra

Marmoset was wearing a pink and white dress

A woman turned more than a few heads when she walked into a rural Virginia courthouse with a monkey -- outfitted in a pink and white dress -- tucked in her bra.

The woman took the pint-sized marmoset to the Amherst County Courthouse Thursday for a hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Somehow, no one noticed the little critter until the woman sat down to do some routine paperwork.

Officials told the News & Advance of Lynchburg that they were confused when the woman referred to her daughter, yet they didn’t see anyone. That’s when she apparently pulled the tiny monkey out of her bra.

“I can’t understand why the deputy didn’t see her. She was peeking out,” the woman told the News & Advance.

The woman added that the monkey is only 7 weeks old and needs constant attention. She said she’d found “Cara” on eBay and had picked her up in Lexington last month.

“We call our cats and dogs babies all the time,” she told the paper. She said when they asked why she brought Cara with her; she asked whether they would leave their kids at home.

The woman also mentioned that along with her new monkey, she cares for several dogs, a crocodile gecko and a garter snake.

Authorities said the woman was not asked to leave the courthouse and it’s unclear if she broke any laws by bringing the monkey.
