Marylanders Celebrate Spring With Sock Burning

Insert your own joke about stinkiness here

Feet feelin' a bit sweaty and stinky in those winter boots? Ewwwwww. At least we have a little suggestion for ya.

Spring revelers around Maryland shed their socks on Saturday to celebrate the first day of spring... and some folks went so far as to burn them.

It's a 30-year tradition for sailors at the Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, who burned their socks by the water. Club member Susan Nahmias said about 375 people were there, tossing socks into a large tub to be burned.

Meanwhile, the Downtown Sailing Center in the Inner Harbor, put a different spin on the tradition. Instead of burning socks, they collected more than 700 pairs of new socks to be donated to the Helping Up Mission in East Baltimore. Director Barry Burnett says the men who go to the mission always need socks.
