Lunar Eclipse: There's a Free App for That

For the first time in 458 years, there's a free app for tracking a lunar eclipse. Oh, and for the first time in 458 years, the lunar eclipse coincides with the winter solstice.

That's some wicked Wiccan stuff.

The SkySafari Lite app, developed by Tim DeBenedictis of San Francisco, has already been downloaded more than 200,000 times.

"We're using this unique eclipse to share our latest astronomy apps with the public, and to spark an interest in astronomy for millions of people at the peak of the holiday season," said Southern Stars founder DeBenedictis. "It's an event we couldn't miss."

The eclipse lasts for more than three hours -- and for 72 minutes the earth's shadow will hide the moon. For more info on the eclipse, click here.

Here's to the App Store stepping up and helping us see through the clouds.
