What in the World Are the Olympians Holding?

Traditionally, winners are given flowers, but this Games, it’s something else.

Traditionally, winners are given flowers, but this Games, it's something else.

In Rio, winners are being awarded a 3-D logo of the Games.

According to Rio 2016 coordinators, the switch from flowers to a trinket of the logo is in the interest of "sustainability and innovation."

"The flowers are usually thrown away or would struggle to survive in the tropical Rio climate if kept," a spokesperson for Rio 2016 said. "To not move too far away from tradition, there are still some flowers present on stage, but each athlete is not given their own bouquet."
