Washington Capitals' Winter Classic Sweaters Unveiled

The Washington Capitals unveiled the sweater the players will wear in the 2015 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic against the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationals Park New Year's Day.

Center Nicklas Backstrom, left wing Alex Ovechkin and goalie Braden Holtby took the stage at Nats Park Tuesday afternoon wearing the primarily red sweaters, which pull from many uniforms worn by the Caps over the past five decades.

“We wanted to create a uniform that not only celebrates the history of the Capitals but also gives the team a unique, new look,” Capitals President Dick Patrick said in a statement. “We feel our fans will really embrace this uniform.”

White stripes on the shoulders, waist and legs predate the Caps, borrowed from professional hockey uniforms worn in Washington from the 1930s, the team said. And a blue "W" on the front includes a silhouette of the Washington Monument.

At Tuesday's event, owner Ted Leonsis said he first inquired about hosting the Winter Classic while watching the first one.

The Winter Classic takes New Year's Day away from college football, he said.

This will be the Caps' second time playing in the Winter Classic. They were the Pittsburgh Penguins' visitors in 2011.
