UMD Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs, Coach Randy Edsall Reprimanded for Lack of Sportsmanship

The Big 10 Conference imposed a hefty fine on the University of Maryland and suspended its wide receiver for one game, over what the conference is calling a violation of sportsmanship last weekend.

Scott Chapman with the Big Ten said UMd. football coach Randy Edsall "failed to control his team" prior to the Nov. 1 game against Penn State, when Maryland players initiated a confrontation with opposing players. The university has been fined $10,000 over the incident.

Diggs refused to shake hands with the captain of the opposing team and had inappropriate contact with a referee during a coin toss prior to the game

"For many, many decades the intercollegiate pre-game handshake has been in place to reflect a spirit of good will and utmost appreciation for your opponent, the game and the institutions that sponsor your sport. Selection as a team captain is an honor that carries with it a greater responsibility to act in a manner consistent with those principles," Chapman said.
