Skins QB Controversy: Beck or Rex?

"I believe in myself no matter if the whole stadium doesn't," Rex Grossman said after getting yanked from Sunday's home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. "I believe in myself that every single play, I'm going to get it done."

The Redskins coaching staff did not share that belief.  By the end of the first half of Sunday's loss to the Eagles, Rex Grossman had thrown two interceptions and trailed 3-20.  When Grossman threw his fourth, Mike Shanahan sat the ex-Bear in favor of backup John Beck.  The second-stringer finished the fourth quarter completing 8 of 15 for 117 yards and a rushing touchdown.

"We thought it was time to make a change and give John an opportunity to show us what he could do," Shanahan said.

Last season, it wasn't until the October 31 game against the Detroit Lions that Donovan McNabb got benched, opening the door for the Rex era.

Is a new QB controversy brewing?  It sure seems like it.

After Sunday's game, players commented on the two quarterbacks, but stopped short of picking sides.

"I'm friends with everyone in this locker room and you hate to see guys you're around go through a situation like that," Chris Cooley said.

The Skins' tight end stressed that blame can't be placed on one player.

"There's a lot of things that go into some of the plays and some of the turnovers that we had," Cooley explained. "We have to assume fault as an offense and we have to assume fault as a team."

Teammates did seem impressed at Beck's composure and ability to perform on short notice, late in the game.

"He did what he had to do just to come in there like that, unexpected, and make plays," said Fred Davis, tight end for the Skins.

The Twitterverse exploded during Sunday's game and Beck began trending nationwide -- partly thanks to tweets like this one:

However you take that, the only question that remains is who will take the field on Sunday for the Skins: Rex or Beck?

"John's been doing well and I thought he did well today," said Shanahan after yesterday's defeat. "I thought he held himself well."

According to the Redskins head coach, that decision won't be made until the game footage has been reviewed.
