Reports: Redskins to Interview Panthers' McDermott

The Washington Redskins head coach search apparently begins with defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, architect of the Carolina Panthers’ No. 2-ranked defense (301.2 yards per game), according to multiple reports.

That defense is a big reason why Carolina went 12-4 and earned a playoff bye this season, and that bye may give the Redskins a chance to interview McDermott this weekend.

Before taking his current job in 2011, McDermott’s NFL coaching career was spent with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 39-year-old held various assistant coach position beginning in 1999 and was the Eagles’ defensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010.

In 2013, Carolina's defense ranked second in total points allowed (241), sixth in passing (214.3 yards/game) and second in rushing (86.9).

McDermott played safety at the College of William and Mary.
