Redskins Embarrassed on Monday Night Football

New play-calling means squat against Eagles

The play-calling changed, but the results remained the same as the Redskins became a national embarrassment in primetime in a 27-17 loss to the rival Eagles.

With the Monday Night Football announcers taking shots at the entire organization whenever possible, the home audience got to hear just how big of a train wreck the Redskins franchise has become.

For those who actually had the guts to show up at FedEx, the results looked even worse in person.

And for the players, well, the game was a combination of frustration and shame, perhaps exemplified best when cameras caught Clinton Portis heaving his helmet in disgust in the fourth quarter after one of many three-and-outs by the Skins offense.

Sherman Lewis' presence in the coaches' box couldn't help the Redskins on this night. Not that anyone thought he would. This team is beyond the help of new Xs and Os. It's beyond the help of schemes and drawings. It all comes down to the lack of execution on the field by the players and the quality of those players hired by owner Dan Snyder and his right-hand man, Vinny Cerrato.

So where do the Redskins go from here? No where -- literally and figuratively.

The team heads into its bye week with its tail between its legs before getting ready for a game in Atlanta in two weeks.

By then, the team could be in for bigger changes than stripping coach Jim Zorn of play-calling duties.

By that Nov. 8 game, the Skins could be in full-scale evaluation mode. They need to find out who they want to bring back next year and who can become a cap casualty. No one should think his job is safe -- whether he's a high-paid veteran or, well, a high-paid second-year flop.

It's obvious that the players who are there now aren't the answer. The team has to figure out what that answer will be in the future.

But something tells us those in charge don't even know the question at hand.
