The Boston Red Sox and pitcher Brad Penny reached a preliminary agreement on a $5 million, one-year contract, according to several reports Monday.

Penny spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and suffered through injuries as he went 6-9 with an ERA of 6.27.

In 2007 he was 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA and he's a two-time National League All-Star.

Penny's career record is 94-75 in a nine-year career with the Dodgers and the Florida Marlins and he helped Florida to a World Series title in 2003.
