Sunday wasn’t a good day on the job for Baltimore Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora. Not only did his team lose 18-10 to the Boston Red Sox but he was benched for the third time in four games. Ouch!
The 37-year old, two-time All-Star, was replaced by veteran Ty Wigginton at the hot corner. The “time-out” from Orioles manager Dave Trembley could be because of Mora’s performance, which has slipped this season.
Mora hit .285 with 23 homers and 104 RBI last season despite being bothered by a foot sprain for several weeks. This year, however, Mora is batting only .256 with three homers and 27 RBI.
Trembley acknowledged the switch was made in part because Wigginton’s contract extends through next year and Mora will become a free agent after this season.
Oh well, there is always the next game -- but maybe not for Mora.
