The Washington Mystics announced that they have officially changed their colors to the red, white and blue. Well, red, navy, silver and white to be exact.

“We are excited to introduce the new color pallet of the Washington Mystics,” Greg Bibb, the Mystics COO, said in a press release. “We look forward to a series of announcements and unveilings around our new colors during the coming months, including new home and road uniforms as a well as a new court design.”

The move was somewhat anticipated as Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns the Mystics along with the Caps and Wizards, has started a shift to the patriotic motif. And it officially leaves the door open for a color change for the Wiz.

In September, The Washington Post reported that the Wizards would go back to the red, white and blue colors of the Bullets era. Apparently, it was a bit of a slip by Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld. After a press conference, Grunfeld was asked if the team’s colors would change this season because of the NBA’s new contract with Adidas.

Grunfeld told The Post, “No. The colors are the same, but as you know, [new owner Ted Leonsis] plans on changing the colors to red, white and blue the next season.”

Of course, other than Grunfeld’s slip, there has been no official comment about the color change. But Leonsis has made it known he would like the colors changed, and has shown his willingness to do so, a la the Capitals.

Leonsis even posted on his blog, Ted’s Take, “That could happen as soon as the following season.”

Of course there is still the debate of the Wizards name, but that’s for another day. For now, it’s just nice to see Washington’s team colors move in the right direction.
