A man competing in Sunday's Nation's Triathlon here in D.C. died in the middle of the race.

Officials say a 59-year-old Virginia man was on the biking portion of the triathlon near Chain Bridge Road and Clara Barton Parkway Northwest when he went into cardiac arrest.

He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead just after 9 a.m.

What would have been the first leg of the triathlon, the swim portion, was canceled Friday because of conditions on the Potomac River after recent heavy rains.

Bill Burke, the race's director, says this was the first death in the triathlon, which has been held since 2005.

Officials have not released the man's name.
