John Thompson III Out at Georgetown

Thompson took the Hoyas to the NCAA tournament eight times during his 13 year tenure

After 13 years with the Hoyas, John Thompson III is out as Georgetown University's men's basketball coach.

The news was first reported by fan blog Casual Hoya and confirmed by a statement from University President John J. DeGioia.

"It is with profound regret and deep appreciation that I informed John Thompson III this morning that the University will no longer be retaining his services as our Head Men's Basketball Coach," DeGioio said in the statement.

Georgetown is beginning a national search for a new head coach, Degioio said.

“I am honored to have been the Head Coach at Georgetown University for the past 13 years, where I had the privilege of coaching and mentoring outstanding student-athletes,” Thompson said in a statement. “I am proud of what my players have accomplished on the court and how they are thriving since leaving Georgetown.”

The Hoyas made eight NCAA tournament appearances under Thompson, reaching the Final Four once in 2007.

Thompson's departure comes after two consecutive losing seasons and failure to qualify for the NCAA tournament three of the past four seasons.

Thompson previously coached Princeton for four seasons before moving to Georgetown in 2004. He is the son of legendary Hoyas coach John Thompson Jr.

“I am grateful to the fans of Georgetown for their tremendous support,” Thompson said in his statement. “Georgetown Basketball has been a part of my life since 1972, which makes this moment eve more impactful but I look forward to my next chapter.”
