Herndon High's Top Shot Wants to Team to Make National Championship

Junior is best air rifle competitor in school's history

A Herndon High School student went to the national air rifle championship this month after placing fourth in a regional competition in January.

Allison Maxwell, a 16-year-old cadet lieutenant in Herndon High School's Navy JROTC program, is the best air rifle shooter in the school's history.

She holds every individual shooting record at the school and would like to see her entire team make the next national championship.

Maxwell says she now believes rifle is something she was always meant to do but isn't sure about how it will fit into her plans beyond high school.

She hopes to go into nursing.

Our news partner, the Fairfax Times, reported on how difficult it is for a student like Maxwell to secure a spot on the rifle team.
