The number of professional football teams in the District is expanding by one.

A professional indoor football team called the D.C. Armor will begin play in the American Indoor Football Association next year.  There is already a team in Baltimore called the Mariners.

"I am so very excited about this franchise," said AIFA co-founder John Morris in a press release. "It is perfectly located in the center of our Eastern footprint. That Washington-Baltimore rivalry is going to be great, and don't forget nearby Richmond in 2010. The Pennsylvania and Carolina franchises are close by as well."

The team will play 10 games next year at the D.C. Armory, according to the Washington Business Journal.  The league said the Armory will be renovated for the team.

Another team is being established in Harrisburg, Pa., to expand the league to 18 teams, the Journal reported.

This isn't the District's first foray into arena football.  The Washington Commandos were part of the original Arena Football League in 1987, playing off and on until 1990.  That team played games at the old Capital Centre and later at the Patriot Center at George Mason University.  For one season the team was known as the Maryland Commandos.
