D.C. United midfielder Fred will join an Australian league team on loan for six games in an effort to stay in shape.

The Brazilian will be eligible to play Nov. 23 with Wellington FC Phoenix, which is based in New Zealand. Fred played in Australia during the 2006-07 season with the Melbourne Victory.

"Fred really wants to continue playing and maintaining his fitness during our offseason, so we have agreed to this short-term loan," United general manager Dave Kasper said.

Fred had two goals and four assists in 23 MLS games this season.
