WASHINGTON -- The District is again trying to lure an NFL team to the city.

For several seasons, the city has tried to convince the Landover Redskins to build a new stadium in D.C.

"We have let the team know that we are interested, and if there is a window of opportunity that presents itself, we're going to just jump right through it," Mayor Adrian Fenty said.

Recently, the city and Redskins owner Dan Snyder's people have been in intense, private talks about a move, News4's Tom Sherwood reported, which would give Washington its Skins back, more than a decade after the team left RFK Stadium in the rearview mirror. No one involved in the talks would comment.

"I'm always looking for opportunities to get the Redskins back in Washington," said Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans, who openly courts the team.

A new stadium would be built at the RFK site and would have about 110,000 seats and a dome, making the city a Super Bowl contender, even if the team isn't. The Redskins might also considering consolidating their operations at the location, moving its training facilities and hall of fame in from Virginia.

But in order to come home, the team has to get out of its FedEx Field lease with Prince George's County, which runs through 2027.
