Surprise visitor teaches kids to skate and shoot

Washington Capitals’ Donald Brashear visits Fort Dupont.
Washington Capitals tough guy Donald Brashear showed a softer side by visiting a group of young hockey players this past weekend in the District.
Brashear, who has spent close to 2,500 minutes in the penalty box in his career, talked with boys and girls aged 6 to 14 from Kids on Ice, a community skating program serving more than 10,000 neighborhood kids every year. Players on the Wilson High School ice hockey team also attended the on-ice session.
"I enjoyed skating with the kids (and) teaching them new skills," Brashear said. "It's nice to see the children's faces light up. They love playing hockey, it's good to see."
Brashear gave tips on how to skate and stop. Brashear also skated with the hockey team and showed them shooting drills. Wilson High School is the only D.C. public school with a hockey team.
Brashear took part in a program sponsored by the French Embassy and the Quebec Government aimed to teach French to children through hockey. Brashear was born in Indiana but grew up in parts of French-speaking Canada.
