Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser to Propose Compromise Deal for New Soccer Stadium

D.C. Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser says she will propose a compromise deal to build a new soccer stadium in the District.

Speaking to the Federal City Council business group Tuesday evening, Bowser said even though she doesn’t become mayor until Jan. 2, she will ask the council to vote on her proposal before the end of this year.

Bowser’s key change would remove the city’s aging Reeves Municipal Center building from a controversial land swap need to make room for the 25,000-seat soccer stadium in Southwest. She said by taking the Reeves Center out of the equation, the District will have more flexibility and control of the project.

"It just isn't necessary for us to be able to acquire the land," Bowser said. "I think that we can better control the product that we get if we decide to sell the Reeves Center in a separate transaction."
