Who's Behind That Facebook Profile?

If it deals with a political candidate, the Maryland BOE wants to know

The Maryland Board of Elections wants to make sure Facebook isn’t misleading any voters this year.

With fall elections just a few months away, state officials will vote on new social media regulations on Thursday.

Jared DeMarinis, candidacy and campaign finance director for Maryland's Board of Elections, says such rules will protect the public from being misinformed.  It will also protect the candidates from people who may try to tarnish their reputation by creating a false account in their name.

If the proposed regulations are passed, any social media account that’s established to promote or oppose a candidate must disclose the identity of whoever is behind it.

Both Gov. Martin O’Malley and Bob Ehrlich, who are running for Maryland Governor this year, already have several pages on Facebook.
