ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Like a scene from a John Grisham novel, an Alexandria courtroom was cleared because of an apparent venomous snake in the building Friday morning.

A snake that looked like a two-foot long copperhead was spotted in a hallway at the Alexandria Courthouse, causing the clearing of the courtroom.

A deputy tried to trap the snake under a box in a hallway, but the snake escaped to a boiler room and made its way into a pipe.

Nearby, a teen in a juvenile holding cell was unaware of the snake's presence in the building, News4's Kimberly Suiters reported.

Animal control investigated, but the snake remains at large.
