Recount Filed in Race for Virginia Senate Seat

A Senate race that could determine the balance of the Virginia Senate is headed to a recount.

Republican businessman Wayne Coleman filed a petition for the recount on Thursday. His campaign manager, Austin Chambers, said the petition was filed on the Eastern Shore.

Coleman trails Delegate Lynwood Lewis Jr. by nine votes out of more than 20,000 cast in a special election to succeed fellow Democrat Ralph Northam, who left his 6th District Senate seat to successfully run for lieutenant governor.

The district includes Norfolk, a small section of Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore.

If Lewis' edge holds and a Democrat takes a special election in northern Virginia next week, the Senate will be split 20-20 with Northam casting the vote on ties.
