While crews are working around the clock to contain the oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, one Virginia senator is taking steps to make sure terrorists don’t target another offshore oil rig.

Sen. Jim Webb wants the White House to develop a plan to protect offshore platforms from attacks, Military.com reported.

“While Congress will continue to scrutinize BP and regulatory agencies, I write to urge you to also be vigilant against deliberate acts, such as an attack or sabotage, that could similarly devastate the region,” Webb wrote in a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Webb supports oil and gas exploration in Virginia waters, even though he’s backed the White House-ordered delay until all safety and environmental concerns are addressed.
