Obama Celebrates Ramadan, Calls Islam “Great Religion”

President Obama said Tuesday during a dinner to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan that Islam is a "great religion."

Obama was joined by ambassadors, Congressmen and women and Cabinet members to celebrate the Islamic tradition, feasting in the State Dining Room in honor of the occasion.

Islam is "a great religion" that is "part of America," Obama said. He lauded Islam's "commitment to justice and progress," celebrating how diverse the Muslim community is in America.

Ramadan began Aug. 22.
