D.C. Staffers … No-Shows

No-shows trigger show-down with council over contracts

Two staffers from District Mayor Adrian Fenty's office apparently were supposed to appear at a D.C. council hearing Monday to answer questions about contracting practices in the Fenty administration. But they failed to show up, and one councilman isn't happy about it.

On Tuesday, Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. said he'll issue subpoenas to get them to talk.

The council is trying to find out how contracts for the D.C. Parks and Recreation Department were doled out without council approval.

The contracts were worth more than $86 million.

Council members say they are concerned that the mayor may be steering contracts to friends.

This is the second round of subpoenas to be issued in connection with the contracts probe.
