President set to pitch reform plan again today

President Obama said all Americans are New Yorkers on Sept. 11.

President Obama made his latest pitch for health care reform in front of doctors and nurses that he said understand firsthand the need for a massive overhaul of the system.

"Nobody has more credibility with the American people on this issue than you do," he told the audience of about 150 doctors wearing white lab coats in the Rose Garden this morning.

Obama, who insists health care reform will pass this year, has found himself on the defensive when it comes to the proposal, denying that he plans to raise taxes on the middle class or that the public option is out of the question.

The president last week pledged $5 billion in government grants to medical research for cancer cures and to help create tens of thousands of jobs. He said the funding would play a key role in his health care plan.

Both Medicaid and Medicare pay less on the dollar than the insurance companies do through their contracts with medical facilities. Add in the cost to these facilities of complying with all the laws and regulations governing health care and we are talking some real money. Another aspect adding to the cost of medical care is the run away cost of malpractice suits. The cost of the insurance hs driven many professionals out of the business. More care in vetting the validity of these suits prior to any trial or settlement, and many re resolved by settlement, would probably go a long way to reducing those costs.
