GOP Lawmaker Says Party Seeks “Great White Hope”

Rep. Lynn Jenkins says she didn't mean to draw parallel

Rep. Lynn Jenkins told conservatives at a town hall forum that the GOP would soon embrace a "great white hope" capable of defeating the Democrat-controlled Congress and President Barack Obama

"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," Jenkins said last week. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington."

Oops.

A spokeswoman for Jenkins said the Kansas Republican meant that GOPers have a "bright future" and was not in fact drawing parallels to the campaign to find a white boxer to defeat black heavyweight champ Jack Johnson in the early 20th century.
