Gray to Enter D.C. Mayor's Race

Council Chairman to file paperwork Tuesday

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray on Tuesday will file paperwork in order to run for mayor, NBC4's Tom Sherwood confirmed.

Gray, in his first term as chairman, has been on the fence for months as to whether he would challenge Mayor Adrian Fenty this fall -- and for good reason. His employment will be on the line.

He will have to give up the chance to run for re-election as council chairman, so if he doesn't win the mayoral race against Fenty, who despite grumblings from constituents still has strong support, he'll be out of a job.

Gray will start off his campaign in a big hole, as Fenty has already raised more than $4 million for his re-election campaign.

Developer Don Peebles has also hinted at a run for mayor..

Gray is a former Ward 7 council member and was the director of the Department of Human Services for Sharon Pratt Kelly in the early 1990s.
