French police arrested a scientist working at European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern) in Geneva who had suspected ties to al Qaeda.

A European nuclear scientist suspected of having al-Qaeda links was arrested by French police, prompting concern that the terrorist group may have infiltrated the nuclear industry.

The 32-year-old suspect, who was detained along with his brother, works for the prestigious European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern) in Geneva, according to French police sources.

An intelligence source told Le Figaro that ''this is a very high level'' case. The suspect, who had been under surveillence for 18 months, is believed to have been in contact with members of al-Qaeda in Algeria. French intelligence officers intercepted messages in which he suggested targets in France, sources said.
