Favola Easily Wins Bitter Arlington Dem Primary

Arlington County Supervisor Barbara Favola won the most bitter of Tuesday's legislative primaries, taking almost two-thirds of the vote over rival Jaime Areizaga-Soto in a Democratic nomination contest.

Favola had the backing of the Washington, D.C., suburb's Democratic Party establishment. But the angry clash with Areizaga-Soto split the party's voters. The winner hopes to keep Senate Democratic Caucus Chairman Mary Margaret Whipple's seat in the party's hands in November.

Favola triumphed as a “once-in-a-century” earthquake based in Virginia drove voters and poll workers outdoors in dozens of precincts. All polling places remained open, and none was closed for longer than about 30 minutes.
