Biden's Son Hospitalized: White House

Vice President Joe Biden's son, Beau, is undergoing treatment at a Delaware hospital for an undisclosed illness.

The White House said the younger Biden is awake and alert, and communicating with his parents and wife, who are with him.

Jason Miller, a spokesman for Beau Biden, said he was admitted to the hospital Tuesday morning.

The vice president appeared on the morning talk show circuit Tuesday from Delaware to discuss President Barack Obama's nomination of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court.  He mentioned nothing about his son's health.

The official White House statement:

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden is at Christiana Medical Center undergoing treatment at present.  He is alert and awake, and communicating with his parents and his wife, who are with him.  We will provide more details as they become available.

Beau Biden, 41, is Delaware's attorney general. He had considered running for the Senate seat his father held before becoming vice
president, but ultimately decided against it.

He became attorney general in 2007 and previously served at the U.S. Justice Department.  In 2009, the younger Biden returned from a yearlong deployment to Iraq with his Army National Guard unit.
