The Gores said it was "a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration."
The couple told friends about the split in an e-mail to friends, according to POLITICO.
Gore served for eight years as vice president under Bill Clinton and was the Democratic Party’s nominee during the 2000 presidential campaign. He previously served as a United States representative and senator from Tennessee.
The couple has four adult children: Karenna, Kristin, Sarah, and Albert III.
Both are still living in Nashville, Tenn.
