Chain of Lights Planned Along Sandy-Damaged Coastline for Anniversary

Sandy devastated much of the metro area's coastlines last October, destroying homes and businesses and taking dozens of lives

A Hurricane Sandy recovery group on Staten Island is planning to mark the storm's anniversary next month by forming a chain of lights across the shoreline, and the group wants the movement to spread to damaged areas across the city and metro area.

Sandy devastated shorelines throughout New York and New Jersey last October, destroying homes and businesses and taking dozens of lives.

In remembrance of the storm and its victims, the Staten Island Community and Interfaith Long-Term Recovery Organization is asking people to participate in a "light the shore" vigil at 7:45 p.m. the night of Oct. 29, the Staten Island Advance reports.

"It was about 6:30 p.m. when the storm hit landfall, and 7:45 p.m. is when the water impact occurred and water rushed into peoples' houses," Rev. Terry Troia, the group's president told the Advance.

The group is asking organizations outside Staten Island to participate in the vigil.

"We are really hoping that everyone affected by the storm -- from Queens and Brooklyn to Staten Island and New Jersey -- will go to the shoreline at 7:45 p.m. to light a candle," Troia said.
