Police: Uber Driver Takes Off With Baby in Backseat

The parents got out of the car to go into a store and the driver continued on to the destination

An Uber driver took off with a Massachusetts couple's baby after the parents requested to make a stop and the driver continued on to the destination, according to police.

Quincy police said the parents called 911 Sunday night to report the Uber driver left with their 9-month-old baby in the back seat.

The father told police the couple was on their way to is his parent's house when they asked the Uber driver to stop at a Tedeschi Food Shops on Washington Street so they could get a drink. The driver then took off.

"We've been trying to contact him but he's not picking up," the father says to the 911 operator. He explains that there may have been a language barrier and the driver "didn't understand."

Police said the driver, who was tracked down in Weymouth using the Uber app, thought only the child's father had gotten out of the car and that his wife was still in the back seat when he continued to drive.

No charges were filed against the Uber driver because the incident appeared to be a misunderstanding, police said.

However, a report was filed by police with the state's Department of Children and Families per protocol because the child was separated from its parents.
